Tonight we went to Incredible Pizza again. Noah, Emily and I played miniature golf. It was their first time playing miniature golf ever. Noah looked more like a polo player chasing his ball around and scooping it with his club. Emily never missed a shot. She would just walk right up to the cup, set her ball down (right next to the pin) and tap it in with her club. That’s Emily… straight to the point, hit the goal. We had a blast.

Please find the 42 minutes to watch this film. It’s very moving and very telling. You can also buy the film at the site, which I’d strongly recommend. As this is the only way many people will have of viewing the film, please pass it on.
The film Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, a documentary exposing the devastating impact of John Kerry’s anti-war activities on veterans and POWs, is now available for free viewing online in a much more watchable high resolution format:

I belong to a great Monday afternoon Bible study with a group of people from my work, an a few others... today the topic of Spiritual Gifts came up, with a suggestion of several books to read, and test to take, and processes to find your personal spiritual gifts. I couldn't help but throw in my two scents worth...
One of the best ways to discover your Spiritual Gifts is to get out and start using them. In other words, look for areas to serve and see if you have a unique gifting in a particular area. Try volunteering in your church, if one role doesn't work out try another. Serve in the Nursery, Volunteer with the Youth, go on a Mission trip, be an Usher, help with your churches web site, be a server for a banquet, go along to feed the homeless, go on an outreach project, teach a women's/men's study, sing in the choir... Then, use input from others and your own personal reflection and prayer to discover how God has shaped you. I like the SHAPE acronym. God has shaped each of us differently, and uses all of our experiences and giftings to accomplish His purpose. God is a God of economy and waist nothing, and He never makes Junk.
SHAPE:
- Spiritual Gifts - What special giftings has God given you to accomplish his work?
- Heart - What grabs your heart? God may have put a special need on your heart, so that you could fill it.
- Ability - What are you skilled at? What are your natural strengths? God give each of us talents and skills that could be applied to serve the growth of His kingdom.
- Passion - What are you passionate about? What increases your energy level when you think about it?
- Experience - God will use your past, good and bad, successes and failures... so that you can comfort others with the comfort that you have been comforted with.
The more that we operate in our strengths, the more effective we will be. Some people want to work on their weaknesses, I think that most people should work on their strengths, so that our good can become our best.
Too often we can learn too much, and do too little.

- How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
- They won't touch it... it's a hardware problem.
- How many mainframe programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
- Light bulbs do not go out on mainframes.
- How many Microsoft programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
- Did you try flipping the switch on and off? If that doesn't work, just wait for the next service pack.
- How many Linux programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
- Only one, but you have to recompile the nation's electric grid to get the change to take affect.
And Finally...
- How many consultants does it take to change a light bulb?
- Only one, but you get to bill for 10 hours.

“Kerry keeps vowing: "I will never stop at anything to hunt down and kill the terrorists." But he will stop at the Iraqi border. Or if the French and Germans aren't on board. Or we don't have United Nations approval. Or it would require investigating a Muslim under the Patriot Act.”
Great quote from Ann Coulter. Very true. http://www.anncoulter.org/
“This November, my generation, which has been absent too long, must grasp that 100 years from now historians will look back at the election of 2004 and see it as the decisive election of our century. Depending on the outcome, they will describe it as the moment America joined the ranks of ordinary nations; or they will describe it as the moment the prodigal sons and daughters of the greatest generation accepted their burden as caretakers of the City on the Hill."

Lately I've been letting the Baghdad Cam from Fox News run while I'm working. It's an interesting way to learn about a place that I know so little about. Windows Media Player 10 at full screen works great.
When I arrive at work in the morning... the sun is setting in Baghdad. When I'm up late working... the sun is rising in Baghdad. Every now and then a police car drives by with their lights on. At night, a large torch lights up the square for most of the night. For the most part it looks like people are going about their business... driving from here to there. So far, no bombs or missiles to speak of.

One of my favorite readings of late, has been the writings of Eric Sink. Erik owns a small ISV (Independent Software Vendor - which basically means that while they produce software, they aren't Microsoft.) Source Gear, in Champaign, IL, USA. Erik has a thriving blog, his writing have been featured lately on MSDN. One of the things that I like about Erik's writings is that, while he is a programmer and is able to approach very technical subjects, the majority of his writings are about other areas that affect programmers. Topics like, marketing, management, career choices... etc. The net result of reading his stuff, is to be a more well rounded person.
Recently, Erik wrote about something that he calls the Career Calculus. There's a log of great truths in the piece; I would like to share one of the great nuggets here:
Next time you're interviewing for a job, pretend that the power structure is reversed. The hiring manager is trying to figure out if there is any chance you are worthy of the job. Ignore that. Instead, spend your time trying to figure out if there is any chance that guy is worthy of being your manager.
Great advice. You only have to have a frustrating employment experience once to realize how keen this is.

Rachel and I have a date planned for tonight. The sitters have been called, the reservations made and I'm coming home early for work. Yesterday, as I made these plans, I realized how “Oklahoma” ish this date will be, and what an incredible woman that I'm married to.
We're going to go look at Guns, Eat Pizza, then play Video Games.
We're currently in the market for a home defense gun. Nothing has happened to bring this on, it's just the sort of thing that you want to have, before you need it, and also the sort of thing that you want to know how to use, and you hope never to have to use it. So we are visiting a gun store, getting educated, trying out their shooting range, handling a couple of different options and making plans on the type of gun that we'll be buying.
Then we're going to Incredible Pizza. We might eat dinner somewhere else first (to make it more of a date), and we might not play too many video games. We're really going for the go-carts.
Either way, I'm blessed. Not only to I get to go look at Guns, Eat Pizza and play video games, I get to do all of that with my wife, and call it a date. What a woman!

If you’ve never heard of “Day Out With Thomas” then you really need to check it out. The kids had a blast. Basically, it’s a Thomas the Tank Engine bonanza. They have a real, full size Thomas the Train, and you get to go on a train ride that he pulls.
