Tomorrow (Monday, Sept 14th) – I’ll be presenting at the Oklahoma City C# Group (MeetUp). This will be a slightly revised version of my keynote that I did at the Tulsa Tech Fest. I really like the changes and I’m looking forward to spending some time with the folks in OKC! This is a lunch time group – they meet at 11:30 – so make sure to clear your lunch time schedule.

This talk goes in to my own philosophy of work, with some good patterns and anti-patterns for development, building team and having a great culture. Hope to see you there!

Update: Use the OKC# meet up site to register, and for updates.

Post event update:

Looks like most everyone enjoyed the talk! BTW – this is a really cool space that Techlahoma has secured for most of the user groups in OKC to use. Really love to see the collaboration and cooperation among so many “different” technology communities! Thank you all for being there, and for the great time.

Last week I got to announce an upcoming talk that I will be giving in Denver, 10 Reasons your software sucks Denver Road Trip Edition! Well my Denver road trip has now turned in to a Colorado road trip as I will be speaking the very next night at the Boulder .NET User Group. This will be a fun night. We’ll be digging in to a very different skill set than most developer talks – looking at tools to help Prototype, Collaborate and Innovate using sketches, prototyping tools and Innovation games.

Slides

Some of the resources we’ll be digging in to are:

Todd Zaki Warfel’s Prototyping book – go get it! Between his book, the Innovation Games, and Designing the Conversation (Awesome workshop guide by my friend Russ Unger)  you’ll get the meat that I’ll have to leave out of my *relatively* short talk.

If you’re in the area – come check it out both talks!

This is quite possibly my most popular talk of all time.

This was the key note at the Tulsa Tech Fest, a featured talk at the Sela Developer Conference in Tel’Aviv Israel and I’ve given this talk at multiple events around the United States.  I’m excited to head to the Rocky Mountain state later this month. I’ll be speaking at the Microsoft office in Denver on June 15th, 2015 talking about the 10 Reasons your software sucks, and the practices that you need to fix it.

If you’re in the Denver area…

first go attend the Denver Dev Day event (that I’m unfortunately missing by about a week), then come to the Denver Visual Studio Users Group on June 15th.. It’s going to be a great time! See you there.

Description

Fresh off of the European tour of “So You Think You Can Code,” * we bring you the hit sensation, 10 Practices Every Developer Needs to Start Right Now. Recently from off-Broadway, you are going to learn some new things and have a fun time learning them! (Seriously, Caleb recently gave this talk at the Microsoft office in New York… right off Broadway). Yes friends, this is the talk that kicked off a controversy at the 2010 Dallas Tech Fest, read the blog, see the slides… then come see and learn for yourself!

Based on years of consulting and working with some of the largest (and smallest) software companies in the world, these are the 10 practices that if you started doing today, would drastically improve the quality and delivery of your software!

* Caleb was never in Europe, but it’s still going to be a great session!

Topics hit on:

  • Object Oriented Principals
  • SOLID Coding
  • Security Concerns
  • Software Patterns
  • Automated Testing
  • Source Control – Branching and Merging Strategies
  • Continuous Integration
  • Agile, Scrum, XP, Lean
  • Team Dynamics
  • Continually Learning, and more

Be sure to hang around afterwards, Caleb will be around to discuss any of the areas from his talk in more detail — it’s going to be great time!

This Thursday I’ll be speaking at the New York City .NET Developers Group.

I’m looking forward to this talk.. I’ll be covering the 10 Practices that All Developers Should Start Right Now! (based on this 10 Practices for Developers blog series)

I recently took on a new client in the travel industry, even though they are based in Dallas – I am working with their .NET development team in New York. As a part of that I am making my first trek to the big apple. I’m really looking forward to this trip to get to know the dev team that I’ve been working with remotely up until now. I’m also taking advantage of this trip visit the NYC .NET Meetup group and to speak at the local INETA .NET Developers Group.

If you’re going to be in the New York City area this week, be sure to ping me – I’d love to meet up with you at one of these events!

Be sure to RSVP!

Speaking in March

This is just a quick note that I’ll be presenting at two different events in the DFW area this month. Hope you can make it!

North Dallas .NET Users Group – March 3rd

First, Wednesday March 3rd, I’ll be at the North Dallas .NET Users Group talking about Model View View-Models (MVVM) for your Silverlight Applications. If you’ve ever seen my Dependency Injection for Silverlight talk, this is pretty much the follow up to that. (above is a snapshot from the last time that I spoke there.)

Technically Speaking DFW – March 27

Have you ever wanted to be a technical presenter, but you weren’t sure how to get started? Or do you want to take your technical presentation skills to the “next level”? This this is the event for you! I love the idea of events like this, and I was honored to be invited to participate. Maybe this will spark more interest in groups like Presenter Mentor?

Teresa Burger, awesome community member and talented developer over at Woot! is organizing this event. It’s $50 to attend, includes lunch, and is a full day of Dave Gunby, Microsoft’s Chris Koenig, MVP extraordinaire Tim Rayburn and also yours truly.

Register for both!

Yep, this is going to be a fun month! Hope to see you there!

This week I will be at the Microsoft MVP Summit in Seattle, while I’m there I will take the time to present at the local .NET User Group. If you are in the area be sure to stop by. It’s going to be a “double feature” between my “Developing Loosely Coupled Applications” talk and my friend, and fellow MVP, Dennis Bottjer will be giving his amazing talk on SharePoint Performance. It’s gonna be awesome!

nddnug I always like going up to the North Dallas DNUG. The first (pilot) CommunityCast.tv episode was shot there… and the last time that I was there Jason Alexander showed of Graffiti before Telligent had it released (CommunityCast episode 6).

Side Note: I just realized that Jason updates his blog less than I update  CommunityCast. ;)  – go follow his twitter instead

Silverlight_smallLogo Tonight I’ll be talking about Microsoft Silverlight, specifically some of the Data Binding and Visual Template features. This is a fun talk, but there is a lot to cover! We’ll start with data binding to business objects and then move to creating visual templates with Microsoft Expression Blend. I’ll also bring my camera so be prepared to chat about what you are doing later in the night!

If you’re in the Dallas area, be sure to stop by and check it out!

fladotnet_name

microsoft_silverlight_logoTomorrow night I’ll be presenting at the Ft. Lauderdale .NET User Group on Silverlight. Specifically, I’ll be covering the process and techniques for creating visual templates as well as some of the in’s and out’s of binding to data and creating data templates.

again… big thanks to INETA for sponsoring this event and for supporting .NET communities all over the world!

INETALogo

It should be a great night, if you’re in the area.. be sure to stop by and say hi!

SouthDNUG

I’ll be speaking at the South Colorado .NET User Group tonight. If you’re in the area make sure and stop by! We’re going to be covering a LOT of Silverlight content. I’m looking forward to it!

You can get all of the meeting details and RSVP here.

See you then!

One of the great things about speaking for INETA is traveling to places that I’ve never been before. July is going to be a little different for me. I was born in Southern California and grew up just an hour north of San Diego in a town called Temecula. (Except for 3 years when I lived in Okinawa)

We moved from Murrieta to Tulsa in 2001 and I haven’t been back to California since then. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 7 years! Aside from the people and family that are in California there are only 3 things that I really miss. So I’m really looking forward to meeting up with my Dad and having a good lunch while I’m there.

If you are going to be in the San Diego area in July… make sure to stop by the .NET User Group and say hi! We might even go grab a bite to eat afterwards… if I used to know you in Southern California… send me an email: blogger[at]calebjenkins[dot]com.

The topic is still TBD, but it will probably be one of these:

  • ASP.NET AJAX with Visual Studio 2008
  • Silverlight with Visual Studio 2008 + Expression Blend
  • Developer Designer Zen (bringing two world’s together)
  • Better Application Design with practical loose coupling

What would you want the topic to be?
